  Mez be turnin 5

So we thought we would do something kinda fun. Each of us are gonna post some mp3 playlists for y'all to download and check out. Basically it's our way of saying thanks for checking out our retarded blog over the years. Darkness, DJ and I started this thing out a while ago to talk about music, but it quickly evolved into talking about whatever the fuck we wanted to, and I think we all like it that way. Crog and SA hoped on along the way and helped pick up the slack when the rest of us don't have anything to say (or are too lazy to take the time to write anything...i.e. me). Anyway I guess I'll be the first one to drop my playlist, hope everyone enjoys the jams...you probably wont like all of it, but there may be a few thing in there you'll dig. Alright, here we go:

1. Giorgio Moroder – The Chase
(this was the theme to the wrestling show Dark and I did on WUOG. I think only two people listened...DJ and Crews)
2. Plastic Bertrand – Ca Plane Pour Moi
(my girlfriend just reminded me about how awesome this song was the other day)
3. Nick Lowe – So It Goes
4. The Beat – Walking Out Of Love
5. The 101ers – Keys To Your Heart
(pre-Clash Joe Strummer)
6. The Strange Boys – This Girl Taught Me A Dance
(my favorite band in my new hometown)
7. Guided By Voices – Pantherz
(I think Dark posted this song on Mez back in 2005, plus did you think there would be a Mez comp without some Pollard)
8. Wire – Dot Dash
9. Siouxie & the Banshees – Monitor
10. Tears for Fears – Mad World
11. LCD Soundsystem – No Love Lost
(Joy Division cover)
12. Harry Nilsson – Jump In The Fire
(ray Liotta does alot of coke to this song in Goodfellas)
13. The Coathangers – Shake Shake
14. Black Mountain – Druganaut (extended mix)
15. Mastodon – Divinations
(new song!!!)
16. Torche – Fat Waves
17. All the Saints – Double Windsor Hassle
(old demo from the ATL band that just signed to Touch and Go...totally killer)
18. Bad Brains – Big Takeover
19. Black Sabbath – It’s Alright
(Black Sabbath goes Beatles...from the very under rated Technical Ecstasy record)
20. The Killers – Spaceman
(this song helps bleed out alot of the horible shit I play...thank you Mr. Flowers)
21. Public Image Ltd – Seattle
22. Steve Parsons – The Howling
(from the amazing new wave werewolf movie The Howling 2...I imagine only Rippy and Ian Cone have seen it)
23. The Smiths – London
(the first time I heard his song was when Anthrax covered it...still my favorite Smiths song)
24. The Standelles – Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White
(Ian Mackaye really likes this song)
25. Still Flyin – Aerosmith, Take Me To The Other Side
(this song is #1 on my most played on Itunes)

Download part 1 here
Download part 2 here

I had to break it up into two parts since Mediafire only takes 100 megs per file....enjoy folks!!!

  MIND JUST FUCKIN BLOWNNNNNNNN!

Yacht Rock Revvue.
There really is no way to describe how incredibly fucking awesome this band is. Ice had been telling me about this for a few weeks and last night he and I went and got totally mellow grooved out of our minds. They play every thursday here in Atl for a solid 2 sets choc full of the smoothest fluidly gentle yacht rock jams. We walk in to "Summer Breeze" and I swear i didnt even know the band was on b/c it sounded like the fucking house PA was playing some music before the show started. Every sound was dead on, I swear it sounded like they were just lipsincin' to the vinyl. SO SMOOTH.
Watch this shit:
I think the highlight for me last night was fucking "BAKER STREET" into "PEG" - I wasnt even tryin to hide the raging hard my slacks were sportin. Totally incredible. Anytime any of you guys want to go to this on a thursday, Ice and I are in. 10 out of 10 dentists would agree with us. Here's a taste smatterin' of just SOME of the jams we heard:

Gerry Raferty - Baker Street
Steely D - Peg
Steely D - Hey 19
Looking Glass - Brandy
Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Pina Colada Song)
Wings - I Love You
Bee Gees - Jive Talkin'

OH yeah, workin' on getting them to get on the boat for the Delirium. Cuz if you aint "tuckin" you aint "fuckin"!

  pictures of my dogs

Yes, with an "S". We adopted a new guy last week, a two year old toy poodle named Onyx who we immediately renamed Manny. Oscar's the other guy, you've probably seen him before, and maybe even felt his tongue glide gingerly across your skin.

  Bro Dan Geller on Pitchfork

Thus continues the shitty beyond shitsville record reviews at Pitchfork. The reviewer talks positively about Ruby Isle and the record throughout the whole review and then gives it a mediocre grade. Pretty much proves you can be a 4th grader with a facebook page and write for them.

the Braves have two top ten prospects, according to Keith Law

Keith Law's Top 100 Prospects list is up over at ESPN's site, and as always it's pretty damn interesting. The Braves have two of the top ten, OF Jason Heyward at #3, and RHP Tommy Hanson at #9. Lower down the list sees #65 1B Freddie Freeman, #67 OF Jordan Schafer, #88 OF Gorkys Hernandez, and #97 LHP Jeff Locke.

Law ranks the Braves' farm system as the 4th best, but they easily could've been higher; the Rangers are the top of the list, in part because of the Mark Teixeira trade, which brought them #4 RHP Neftali Feliz. I was cautiously optimistic about that trade, but there's no way to not consider it an absolute failure now. Tex was gone a year later, whereas Feliz is now one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, and Saltalamacchia and Elvis Andrus will most likely both be starting for Texas. Granted Andrus and Salty would still be blocked in Atlanta, by Yunel Escobar and McCann respectively, but you gotta think Atlanta could've gotten something of more long-term value had they not shot for the moon with Teixeira. Texas also has #77 C Max Ramirez, who Atlanta traded to Cleveland for Bob Wickman in 2006, and was then sent to Texas last year for Kenny Lofton. And the final ex-Brave to make the top 100 is another catcher, #51 C Tyler Flowers, who was just sent to the White Sox last month for Javier Vazquez. I can't fault either of those deals, no matter how horribly Wickman ended his Braves tenure, but that Texieira trade is historically awful.

Anyway, I hope Heyward, Hanson, Freeman, and the rest pan out for Atlanta.

ten (or eleven) records I liked in 2008

Okay, we decided rankings are for college football and the FBI, so this is in alphabetical order. I'm also putting together an MP3 mix with a song from each record; I hope to have that up tomorrow. My Krysmopompas MP3s are at home.

Blank Dogs - On Two Sides - Sacred Bones / Troubleman Unlimited
GBV’s Propeller if Pollard was more into ‘80’s British synth-pop. Probably my most listened to band of ’08, between all the singles, December’s Fields EP, and this excellent full-length.

Endless Boogie - Focus Level - No Quarter Records
Another round of extended riffin’, but unlike their first two you can actually find this one in stores. Relatively restrained as far as zoned out, psych-blues drone goes, at least compared to stuff like the Bad Trips or Wooden Shjips, but still unrelentingly awesome.

Krysmopompas - Heute Schlafen-Morgan Aufwachen - S-S Records
Fantastic double-LP collecting this German’s band’s first two ltd. ed. CDs. Sounds a bit like Wire, a bit like Devo, underneath some dude ranting in German. Best use of a Casio SK-1 since the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth.

Kurt Vile - Constant Hitmaker - Gulcher Records
This here’s a Philly guy who makes modest space pop that sounds like a less confused Ariel Pink. I think he’s also in that Secretly Canadian band War on Drugs. Constant Hitmaker is full of beautiful songs with enchanting, non-intrusive production. Also excellent live, a nice gentle swirl of subtly psychedelic good vibes that didn't sound all that much like the record.

Love Is All - A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night - What's Your Rupture?
These guys maybe played the best show(s) I saw this year. Second record pumps the same super-posi noisy dance-rock as the debut. They know what works and will work it until it doesn’t. The “Tally Ho” riff in “Wishing Well”: best homage / rip of the year. They also put out an awesome covers EP, too.

Stephen Malkmus - Real Emotional Trash - Matador Records
I’m pretty sure this is the best thing Malkmus has done since Wowee Zowee. This record kinda exists to show off how thoroughly legendary he’s become with the guitar. And the lyrics, so often nettlesome since Brighten the Corners, aren’t at all a drag. Great stuff, I think maybe a little overlooked for some reason.

No Age - Nouns - Sub-Pop
Not on this list just ‘cuz it sounds like the classic indie-rock I loved in high school, but ‘cuz it sounds like really great classic indie-rock I would’ve loved in high school. Another record that deftly combines noise and melody, which I guess is the thing I most prize in music. I am amazed at the racket two dudes can kick up when they want to, between this and Sic Alps.

Sic Alps - US EZ - Siltbreeze Records
Snippets of fuzzy, shambolic rock classicism from two dudes who used to play in Henry’s Dress and the Ropers. It’s pretty ‘60’s, pretty psychedelic in a mellow non-freak-out way, pretty pretty despite occasional dust-ups, etc. Some fine Who-reverence at times. Reminds me of a better / more focused Gris Grig / Mirrors / Greg Ashley. Also played, again, maybe the best show I saw in '08.

Times New Viking - Rip It Off - Matador Records
The semi-indie-rock big-time hasn’t ruined ‘em. Rip It Off is just as ridiculously catchy and noisy as their first two, but also more consistent. They kinda only deal in anthems, I think. Great live, too.

Zola Jesus – Poor Sons 7” on Die Stasi; Soeur Sewer 7” on Sacred Bones
Not an album, but two excellent singles from a Wisconsinite named Nika on two very good small labels. If a boom-box could capture the audio of a Kate Bush song collapsing in on itself, it could very well sound like Zola Jesus. Some fine arty atmospheric noise that never loses site of songcraft, and maybe the most exciting stuff on this list.

also: some seven-inches I dug:

Blues Control: Snow Day - Subpop
Catatonic Youth - Piss Scene - HOZAC
Electric Bunnies - Chewing Gum - Florida's Dying
Estrogen Highs - She Don't Bother - Milk'n'Herpes
Hearts of Animals - s/t - Dull Knife Records
Leper Pring - Coma - Die Stasi
Love Tan - This Land is No Good - Sweet Rot
Nice Face - Thing In My Head - Sacred Bones
Oneida - Heads Ain't Ready - These Are Not Records
Times New Viking - Stay Awake - Matador
Titmachine - I Wanna Be Your Dog - Meeuw
Titmachine - We Build a New City - Siltbreeze
Vivian Girls - Wild Eyes - Plays With Dolls
Wounded Lion - Carol Cloud - S-S Records

alright cool thanks

  Artistic Perfection

2008, the bitch and the brew

Man, 2008 was a seriously fucked up year. Probably the worst year I've been a part of maybe ever. There was a whole truckload of bullshit that went on that I don't ever care to go through again. It started out just days into 2009 with our new dog getting very sick and us having to make the extremely hard decision to return him. It then went on to include such awesome things as my mom being diagnosed with colon cancer, L losing her job in this insane economy, my aunt passing away, an ungodly bad 3 months at work, and close friends dealing with a scenario you would want no one to go through. That was SOME of the bullshit, and if you know me you know I dont dwell on negative shit. Fuck the stress. So to counter balance that bad shit - here is the good shit that went on...we had Ozzy (the raddest labradude ever) come into our lives, my mom whipped the shit out of cancer and now is in full recovery, L got a new job, L is almost done with school (extremely proud of her), I went to more Dawgs games, L and I attended our first ever UGA/FLA game in Jax and despite the loss we had a jammin' time, we had the most incredible Yacht Zap that could have ever been conceived, Wedding Zap, mutherfucking OBAMA!, Ice turned 30 (and all the awesome shit that encompassed that), the France celebrated its 10 year anniversary with a show for the ages, death wish, turned 31 with LEX friends in town, I finally finished the third ExcaliBrah record which was two and a half years in the making - That thing almost broke me, truly, but all the hard work paid off and I am extremely proud of the outcome of it something that hopefully makes my friends laugh, my sister graduated OU and got accepted to one of the best culinary schools in the nation, The Falcons were FUCKING incredible, our friends started having babies, I finished the artwork for the Still Flyin' record (which if my artwork is 1/100th as awesome as the music, I'll have achieved my goal, the record smokes dudes!), and finally - L and I enjoyed another year surrounded by our incredible friends. I dont think we would have made it through the good or the bad without such a support group. So yeah - 2008 was fucking weird dude, but whatever its over - 2009 is going to be way better. I can already feel it. No fucking drama and FUCK THE STRESS.

2009 Predictions: Falcons will have a winning season (breaking the streak), Dawgs will play well under Joe Cox & win the SEC after Tebow pulls a Tom Brady and gets beheaded on the first drive of this season, Still Flyin' will become a household name, Ozzy will get his nards removed, Laura will GRADUATE(!!!), and more things that even top this shit. Some stuff i know, some i dont. So fuck yeah 2009, lets party.

Record lists coming soon.

  RIP Patrick McGoohan

'Prisoner' actor Patrick McGoohan dies in LA
By ANDREW DALTON – 37 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick McGoohan, an Emmy-winning actor who created and starred in the cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said Wednesday.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

But he was best known as the title character Number Six in "The Prisoner," a surreal 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly tries to escape.

  what does this tell us

Only eight baseball players have ever changed teams after playing with one team for twenty straight seasons. Four of them spent those twenty seasons with the Braves. That's crazy.

Derek Lowe would be a good signing if it weren't for the money. As is, still solid. Yeah, he'll be 39 when the deal ends, but unlike Smoltz, Glavine, AJ Burnett, Ben Sheets, Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, or most of the other starters mentioned in Braves rumors, Lowe has no history of injury. Dude's been ridiculously dependable since the Sox moved him to the rotation eight years ago. He should make a good bridge to what could be the next generation of great young Braves starters.

Kawakami, meanwhile, is scary. He might be solid, but too many experts are predicting Kei Igawa Mk II. Hopefully they're all wrong.

Still, Lowe / Vazquez / Jurrjens should be an above average trio, and hopefully two of Glavine / Kawakami / Morton / Campillo / Reyes / Hanson will pan out. There's also the possibility of Hudson returning late in the season, if they're still in the playoff hunt. Now go sign Adam Dunn or turn some non-top prospects into a solid left-fielder with power.

OZZY SEZ: "Break Yo'self Punk Ass Portuguese Water Dog"

He also said, "Don't worry, Barack will start this shit off right. Labradude col' chillin in the White House. Respect that, playa."

When asked about the Portuguese Water Dog's grooming, Ozzy quipped, "That bitch haircut look gay. What'd the fuckin' power go out? Shit looks like doodoo, dogg."

  Thorn's making it

It being this, the webcomic Registered Weapon, along with Gardner Linn and Dave Lentz. Great stuff. These dudes are highly supportable. You don't have to like comics to enjoy it, you just have to like life. And Chris. Or either of the three.

more on that q&a w/ Chipper

the AJC's put it up on its own page now, so no more dealing with Dave O'Brien's slow-loading weblog.

I don't see how anybody could have any confidence in this front office anymore, but I can't completely absolve Smoltz, here. The Braves have paid him $130 million during his career; what's a surer sign of respect than that?

I am trying not to think about this

But I can't help it. Some interesting comments from Dave O'Brien's blog at the AJC:

Here’s a taste of Chipper’s comments to Jeff Schulz just a bit ago:

Asked how he felt about this, Chipper said: “I’m pissed. I’m really pissed.”

About his conversation with Smoltz last night:

“He went through the whole scenario with me. The underlying tone was extreme disappointment — and from my end it was shock. I could see anyone one else going somewhere before John Smoltz. He’s been one of the faces of this franchise for 20-some years. With all of the gambles that the Atlanta Braves have taken over the years on players, for a couple of million more dollars, you don’t gamble on John Smoltz when he tells you he’s going to be back?

“The one guy I would gamble on is John Smoltz. After everything that’s happened to this organization this winter, the players and the fans need something good to happen. I’ve been keeping up with the news. I’ve been reading the blogs. The one silver lining we had was John Smoltz being back in the lineup this year. We could have had that dominant guy back in the lineup. But we won’t – and for what, a couple of million dollars?”

update: and more:

(when did you talk to him)
“It was between 11 and 12. He was very upset. This is the only organization he knows, It’s like a breakup. There are some guys in that clubhouse who just lost a father figure. I lost a brother. If he’s retiring, that’s one thing. But for him to be playing somewhere else is unacceptable to me.”

On the idea that Smoltz would’ve been worth the money even if he doesn’t pitch again, based on what he’s done for the team:

“He’s totally worth it – just to give him that opportunity. John Smoltz deserves that right. At 41 years old, there’s no reason to not give him that chance. I don’t care how many anchors or staples or whatever are in his shoulder. If I’m gambling on one guy, it’s John Smoltz.”

Given developments this winter, does Chipper want to remain a Brave?

“I would love to stay here. But so would John Smoltz. I’ve said all along, every dog has his day. Today, it’s Smoltz’s day. I dare say my day is not far off.”

He'll be traded by August.

  If He Was A Closer...

"I personally love closers. As you guys know I'm a big fan of the Red Sox and so I love Jonathan Pappelbon. There's something about when a closer runs outta that bullpen to his song and puts the other team to bed that night. I like the mentality of one guy being your ninth inning guy as opposed to the closer-by-committee approach for different situations. Sometimes I think about what it would be like to be a closer, to come in and just end this game. That would be a dream for me, 'cause I'm a big emotion guy and I'd love to have that responsibility to my team and my city.
I've thought about it, and my song would be "Closing Time" by that group Semisonic. You know the one: Closing Tiiiiiiiime. Except I'd just have that loop over and over again "Closing Tiiiiiiime, Closing Tiiiiiiiime" while I came in from the bullpen. And I wouldn't run to the mound; I'd walk just to soak it all in. And for the away games it wouldn't matter that I didn't get to hear my song because I'd hear all the fans booing me and that would be enough to get me going."

-LIL WAYNE

The Braves beat writer is pretty rad

Dave O'Brien posted his top 50 albums of the year over at ajc.com and it's pretty damn good. Aside from a few turds (Oberst, Mellencamp), I'd say this is a man with excellent taste. I can only imagine him going up to McCann and being like "Yo dude, you heard that new No Age records...shit slays check it out." He'd probably look at him funny and ask about John Mayer or something
