  I wrote this

One thing this week: an article about the Vivian Girls, in the Weekly Dig. They have never played in an arena, to the best of my knowledge. Or probably even a garage, for that matter, since they're in or around New York City.

Everybody I know who regularly reads this weblog would probably like this band.

One of the fucking best....weekends....ever! What. I'm serious. Try to get some sort of recount up, but seriously it would take a book. Written by Jimmy Buffett.

  Gentleman Jesse

Just picked up the new album "Introducing Gentleman Jesse"...shit is sick: A+. If you dig late 70's/early 80's power-pop like Elvis Costello or Nick Lowe, you'll go ape shit. Some blog posted an extensive review and backgroud on him and you can even download three mp3's off the new record. Check it here.

Since we've been posting a bunch of Youtube Muppet videos lately

differences between writing for a weblog and writing for a paper

Any comparison I might make between a band and the Mets' Generation K would most likely be edited out of one, but not the other.

  Guilty Jam

(ft. Chris Brown) - Forever
Found at skreemr.com

This song is good for these 4 awesomely terrible lyrics:
"moving at the speed of light towards eternity"
"you join me in the middle of ecstasy"
"double your pleasure, double your fun"

and the one that takes the cake...

"look what i can do with my feet"

The Mall of Georgia Regal IMAX Theater can suck it!

Batman IMAX shows down all day long yesterday. Got to the theater an hour and 10 minutes before the 3:40 show to get in line. The three shows before ours had canceled b/c the projector was fucked up, but the manager didnt think it was necessary to tell us as we waited in line. They announce the show had been canceled and gave us vouchers for a free movie at regal and told us to go to regular theater 11 to wait in line. Everyone was hauling ass to get over there. We get there and the line is long all the way down the hall. Wait some more for the 4:10 showing, end up getting decent seats. Zieg and Licky ended up waiting in the Fandango line at the end of the movie to get our full refunds, which ruled. Either way - fucking ordeal.

THANK GOD THOUGH, THEY GOT THE PROJECTOR FIXED TODAY!!! WHOOPDEEFUCKINDO!

  Keith Moon on Horse Tranquilizers

This is a great video. Stick with it. The who in 1973 at the Cow Palace. Keith Moon takes 2 horse tranquilizers and passes out twice in the middle of the show, mid song. The first time he wakes up after a splash of water in the face then tries to fight with Pete. They get him behind the kit again and 3 seconds into the next song he's passed the fuck out face down on the drum kit (SA). Then the Who asks this dude to come up and jam from the crowd. He does it and does a damn decent job for stepping in with one of the best bands of all time.

  Watchmen trailer

So, seriously, awful music aside: could this maybe not actually suck? It's looking good so far.

UPDATE: Apparently Empire took it down 'til tomorrow. Maybe they jumped the gun a bit. It's on YouTube for at least a little while, though.

  Should Have Gone To This...

FUCK! This was like a wet dream weekend for me back in 1991. Mudhoney, Green River, Seaweed, Vaselines, Red Red Meat, Eric's Trip, The Fluid coupled with the jammers of new: Fleet Foxes, Conchords, No Age, Beachwood Sparks, and Comets On Fire. Comedy too with David Cross and Patton. DAMN!

If flights were like, free - me and Brad Kramer probably would have gone. I remember sitting in his bedroom back in middle school listening to Nirvana, Mudhoney, thrownups and afghan whigs records (the early good ones) for hours. His sister was several years older and probably single handedly gave me a glimpse into good music. I saw Mudhoney for the first time in '93 and they fucking destroyed. Walked out and opened with Suck You Dry and the Masquerade practically caved in on itself. Sub Pop was one of those labels to me that couldnt put out a bad record. I would walk up to turtles or that other record store in the home depot shopping center and search out any record put out on SP. 90% of it was right on, the rest was Tad. Tons of vids up at youtube of the whole event. Here are some choice ones:

Mudhoney - In N Out Of Grace
Vaselines - Molly's Lips
Green River - This Town
Flight of the Conchords - The Most Beautiful Girl In The Room
No Age - Nirvana Cover (I think its that rarity "Old Age")

ATX....doesn't quite sound right, but we'll make it work

So I’ve been keeping this under wraps for a few weeks, but I got a job in Austin, Texas. I’m getting back in the radio business. I’m gonna be working for a station that’s pretty similar to 99X. I’ll be holding down the 10am – 2pm shift and will get to do a noon show called the Flashback lunch (kinda like the Retroplex was on 99X). All this stuff has happened really fast and I didn’t want to jinx it by telling too many folks.

I’m gonna be really bummed about moving from Atlanta, since I was born and raised in this great city. I have so many great friends and family members here that making the decision to leave was incredibly difficult, but after working at WUOG for two and a half years and 99X for almost five, I knew this was the right decision.

I wasn’t gonna move to Myrtle Beach or Cleveland to get back in to radio, but Austin is such a cool city, that to pass up an opportunity like this would be foolish. I’m gonna miss everyone like crazy, but let’s just think of this as the Mez Eclipse empire expanding. Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and now Austin. Takin over the world bitches!!!

So with all that being said, I wanna see you guys come out on Saturday, July 26th to Johnny’s on North Highland. I’ve been DJing there for months and figured I might as well have my last night there be a chance for everyone to get together and rage. I’ll have all my DJ equipment set up, so bring your Ipod’s and we’ll kick out the jams.

Love you guys and am gonna miss everyone…ATL 4 LYFE (in my best Scott Hall dialect)

SF/JSF SXSW ’09….let’s do this!!!

  Rock Band 2 tracklist

Rock Band 2 comes out for the 360 in September, later in the year for PS3 and Wii.   A+

Best movie I've seen this year. Fucking awesome.

  I FUCKING LOVE THIS BAND!

Ween
July 9, 2008
Nashville
City Hall

Holy hot shit. What a show. First time I'd traveled outside Athens or Atlanta to see the dudes, and shit was it fun. I had to go up there for work and tied in this show with my trip, so it was a huge bonus. Ayers and I got to our hotel on Wednesday around 4 - popped a few cold ones while watching Fire In The Sky on HBO. We call down to the desk for a cab around 6. This "woman" answers the phone and says it will be here in 15minutes. We go down there and the "woman" is not a "woman" its a dude. With a voice higher than fucking Mike Tyson. Shim asks..."where you boys going tonight?" we said down town and he wanted to know "you boys going to the club?" explained that we're going to see a show and then he says "well my name's HERSCHEL and when you guys get back if you need anything be sure to call down to me!" Hilarious. We walk out the cab comes and its happens to be the fucking most racist cab driver in all Tennessee. Halfway through the ride we also realize he might be drunk. He asks if we want to hear some jokes. He then tears into about 10-15 of the worst off color jokes off all time. Then yells at a black dude out the window and tells him to "suck this white cock" then yells at some girls walking around asking if they want to come party whith him in the "garden patch"???? It was all i could do not to jump out of the van. Some homeless dude was sitting there when we got out and he yells at him and convinces the guy to give him a quarter. FUCKING WEIRD!!!

Get out and he had dropped us off at the ween forum preparty thing at some bar called the Flying Saucer. About 400 kinds of fancy beer on tap. I got railed on for ordering a miller light, fuck off hipsters. Met up with this dude who bought one of those weendawg shirts from me in Athens. He told me that he took his shirt to Bonnaroo and saw 5 other dudes wearing them! Hilarious. Had a few beers and head to the venue. This was the second to last show at this place before it closes down and gets converted to an Urban Outfitters...hilarious. Nashville is getting pretty posh. 1,500 capacity and it was sold out - 2 MUTHERFUCKING PEOPLE checking ids. So the line was out the fucking ass and it was raining. Oh well. We got in there, got to the bathroom, got to the bar and Ween starts to a half empty place because the line was still so long.

They opened with "Dont Shit Where You Eat" - totally knocked me on my ass, hadnt seen that one before an it kind of set the tone for a total brownout of a night. They were on fucking total fire. SLAYING and the crowd was giving it back too. A little ways in they ignite "Roses Are Free" and were feeling it so much they extened the jam (which they normally dont do on this jam) and JUST HAD TO KICK THAT SOLO ONE MORE TIME. Deaner was bent over just fucking riffing out of his mind. Other huge highlights were: Flutes of Chi, Your Party, Woman and Man, My Own Bare Hands, Light Me Up, Sorry Charlie, Springtheme, and of course Buckingham Green. One cool moment of the night was when they invited Bobby Ogden up on stage to jam 2 songs off the country album with them. He was the original studio musician who played on that album and toured with them. Special treat. Best part of the night though hands down was the fucking encore. Ayers and I decided to push way up front b/c we were jamming mid way back most of the time. They come out and the shit was immediately on - almost like they were daring themseves to jam it. ALL LATINO ENCORE: Fiesta > Puertorican Power > El Camino > Buenos Tardes!!!! HOLY SHIT! And they went from song to song with almost no time between, so when Gener hit the opening line of Buenos Tardes, the fucking place ERUPTED! It was so fucking crazy i cant explain it. Took some cool pictures below. Under them is the full setlist. GHAD DAMN!!!!

  ATLANTA BRAVES BASEBALL

Seriously: the only way to rebuild my excitement in this season is to enter into a full-on rebuilding project. I guess a highly improbable months-long winning streak would excite me too, but the worst thing that could happen to this club is another extended period of winning between now and the end of July. They have too many holes to fix to make the playoffs, and I'd rather see them write off the present to strengthen the future than trade any solid prospects for mediocre starters or outfielders. Here are some thoughts.

1. I'm glad they finally sent Jeff Francoeur down. I hope that kid can right himself and quit killing this team.

2. Boston Herald dude says the Sox are keeping an eye on Teixeira. Awesome. Make a deal now. SP Justin Masterson, OF's Josh Reddick, Chris Carter, and Ryan Kalish, and SP Kris Johnson would all be good prospects to get back. Or shit, if they'd go for it, aim high for Jon Lester or Clay Buchholz and then one of those OF prospects. Reddick would be my pick, as he's from Georgia, younger than Carter, and probably closer to the major leagues than Kalish. I doubt the Sox would do that, and even Masterson / Reddick / third player might be farther than they're willing to go. Still, if they can't get a solid young arm like Lester or Buccholz and at least one top-flight position prospect, or else three top prospects, thent hey should let Teixeira play out the year and cash in the draft picks. (and hey, Herald: where were you with the Allston/Brighton brothel tip back when I lived over there?)

3. Seriously, they should trade Tim Hudson. They could get shit for him. Good shit! Maybe not from an AL team, as the "Hudson can't pitch against the AL" notion has spread like wildfire. But the Cubs, Cardinals, and Dodgers could all use another arm. And all have young guys the Braves could use.

The Cubs were hesitant to give up Sean Gallagher for CC Sabathia, so unless they get really desperate the next few weeks I doubt they'd offer him for Hudson. But then Hudson's under contract for at least one more season, unlike CC. Gallagher would definitely be a welcome part of any return. If he's still off-limits, then would the Cubs send phenomenal 3B prospect Josh Vitters, journeyman OF who's never really gotten a chance Matt Murton, and a low-level pitching prospect for a year-and-a-half (maybe 2 1/2) of Hudson? Reliever Kevin Hart is already 25 and hasn't shown much at the major league level, but has been fantastic in the minors. Pre-season top prospects Tyler Colvin (OF) and Jose Ceda (RP) have both struggled in the minors this year, but remain intriguing players.

Any trade talks with the Cardinals should start with OF Colby Rasmus. Dude's awesome, and an outfield of him, Jordon Schaefer, and Francoeur would gobble up just about every ball that didn't make it over the fence. He's probably untouchable, though. There's not a lot of interest beyond him. C Bryan Anderson would be a good pick-up if there was any intention of moving Brian McCann to first (not time for that yet), or moreso as an add-in to a subsequent Tex-to-Boston trade. They have a few potentially interesting minor-leaguers, like SP Ty Herron, RP Kyle McClellan, and 3B slugger David Freese, but few legitimate top prospects. Without Rasmus in play, any deal with the Cardinals would require quantity over quality.

The Dodgers' minor league system is stocked with quality young arms, and despite being only a half-game out of the West they might be content to sit pat and focus on next year. Yeah, they're a half-game out, but they're also two games under .500. The NL West is an embarrassment, yet again. Still, if they do plan on making a run, they could use a healthy, proven major league starter to bolster their injury-plagued rotation. Hudson would fit that bill swimmingly, plus be a handy replacement for the free-agent-to-be Derek Lowe. Top prospect SP Clayton Kershaw is, again, probably untouchable, although he's been mediocre in the majors this year and could be trade-bait for an upgrade to their anemic offense. If they won't deal him for Hudson, see if they'll offer up OF Delwyn Young, SPScott Elbert, and/or RP Jonathan Meloan. OF Matt Kemp would be a good pick-up, too, but I doubt he's available; also, the Braves strike out enough as it is.

4. Trade Will Ohman. Probably every single club still in contention would give up a nice prospect for a lefty as effective as Ohman. Call around, Wren, and make the best deal possible.

5. Be patient with Jo-Jo Reyes and Charlie Morton. Let 'em work their shit out in the major leagues. Only send them down if they struggle consistently and start to have their confidence shaken.

  America, Fuck Yeah!

Fuck yeah!

Had to post about this b/c it blew my mind. Was sitting in the middle of peachtree stretching for the Peachtree and this dude came up in front of me to stand. On his leg full from his knee to his ankle was the most amazing tattoo ive seen in a while. Fucking Steven Segal in an action pose blasting a gun in black with his autograph in neon red scrawled across it. I almost lost it.

Then Ice, SM, Jais, and Debbie came up and we started the race. As we were crossing the starting line, we decided who we were running this peachtree for. UGA VI.

Every mile was for one of the past UGAs. Then you get to mile six and almost start to tear up. (mainly b/c they changed the route and the last half mile was fucking uphill! but really for UGA!)

We almost ran straight past the finish line and said "get out of the way we've got to make it to mile 7 for UGA VII, god damn it!"

UGA, you are my forever dude.
Happy 4th yallz.

ICE: "CNN EXCLUSIVE. FIRST PICTURE OF UGA VII SURFACES!!!"

so it is written... by me!!!!!?!1?!!

Two things this week:

1. A review of the awesome Blank Dogs album for the Flagpole.

2. An interview with Chris Barth of the Impossible Shapes for the Weekly Dig, who apparently don't update their website as quickly as the Flagpole. I'll toss a link up here when one exists.
