seeing Jacob's movie will get you stabbed.

Out in California some dude stabbed some folks in a theater showing The Signal, that movie co-directed by Jacob Gentry. This stabbing guy is one thing about California that does not, in fact, rule.

Has anybody seen The Signal, by the way?

  movies I saw this weekend

MILDRED PIERCE: I didn't expect it to be so damn melodramatic. It was disappointing to see how passive and gullible Crawford's character was, as I was expecting her to be a blistering, ball-obliterating hellcat. Almost sort of hilarious, but completely unintentionally.

BE KIND REWIND: It's okay. It would be nice to live in a world without cynicism, and where a highly varied community really could be united through "art". Although extremely cheesy and unrealistic, I still found it rather touching, and knowing that I would completely mock and shit over such a situation in real life depressed me. The clips of their remakes are awesome, but Mos Def and Jack Black are both annoying in their own ways. So, again, it's okay.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD: Probably should've won last night?

  Good News

The only disabled guy on our floor has finally retired, after 45 years of service. So now I can use the handicapped stall without feeling guilty.

  RIP Steve Gerber

Steve Gerber died yesterday, in a hospital in Las Vegas. He wrote some of the best and most idiosyncratic comics of the last 30 or so years. He came to fame working for Marvel in the '70's, writing the definitive takes on Man-Thing and The Defenders, and coming up with his best-known creation, Howard the Duck. A legal battle over the rights to Howard ended his first tenure at Marvel, but was a vital step towards gaining recognition and financial restitution for comic book creators. He did some comics work for DC, Marvel, and various independent publishers in the '80's and '90's, but spent most of his time working in television, both for cartoons like Thundarr the Barbarian, GI Joe, and Dungeon & Dragons, and an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Gerber's profile has risen somewhat of late, as respected novelist Jonathan Lethem has revamped Gerber's Omega the Unknown book for Marvel, along with a recent Howard mini-series and Gerber's own work on Dr. Fate for DC. Still, his fantastic '70's work for Marvel is his best-remembered, and mandatory reading for anybody interested in mainstream American comics.

UPDATE: Obituaries from Mark Evanier, Gail Simone, Dan Slott, Tom Spurgeon...

  Chipper Jones on romance:

from Dave O'Brien's Braves blog at the AJC:

Girls like the romance. Whatever u do, it better be original. Flowers and candy are nice, but every woman loves the bling. At least that’s what I’ve experienced. But what do I know, I haven’t had the best luck with the ladies.

  one thing I can't understand:

how ANYBODY could vote for Clinton over Obama.

Well, I can think of one reason why, but I seriously doubt there are that many racists voting in the Democratic primaries.

I know we have at least one pro-Clinton commenter. Please explain why the uncharismatic, unengaging, severely divisive senator (from a state she had never previously lived in), who has done nothing especially notable in her seven years in office (other than voting for the resolution that led to the war), should win the nomination over her dynamic and exciting opponent.

Compare Clinton's speech last night to Barack Obama's. One is lifeless and a bit smug, and would seem robotic even without the feedback from the PA. The other is passionate and genuinely moving.

So, why should anybody vote for Clinton? They don't seem too far off on the issues, and Obama destroys her when it comes to likability. Unless you're afraid America is still too racist to vote for a black candidate, why would you think Clinton has a better shot of beating McCain (or whoever)?

  Obama votes for himself

Senator Barack Obama cast his vote in his hometown of Hyde Park, IL today, quipping: “It was close but in the end I went for Obama.”

  answer by noon today

Okay, I'm going to see a movie when I get off work at noon, but I can't decide which one. It would definitely be There Will Be Blood, but I didn't sleep much last night and probably won't be able to stay awake through that one. The other option is Cloverfield, which is really short, but I was slightly hungover when I woke up so perhaps the hand-held puking movie isn't a good idea. Thoughts? Any of you seen both?
